Donnie Darko is the 2001 psychological thriller written and directed by Richard Kelly. Strange things begin happening to Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) a teenager living in Middlesex, Virginia. Donnie is a troubled teenager that often finds himself getting into trouble on a daily basis, as a result his parents hire a psychiatrist to evaluate their son. He is quickly thought to have paranoid schizophrenia and is prescribed medicine to combat the effects. Donnie begins taking the pills but it only makes things worse.

One night he is awoken by a character created by his mind, a man in a bunny suit that he calls Frank. Frank leads him out of his bedroom one night and tells him the exact time that the world will end. While he is out of his room a jet engine falls through the house, which would have killed him if he remained inside, creating a paradox. Donnie wants to get to the bottom of the strange events surrounding him.

Donnie Darko is an independent film that was made on a budget of $4.5 million. The film explores characteristics of society such as mental health, time travel, human nature, and societal pressure. Throughout the film we are introduced to characters that are often exaggerated caricatures of their profession or their social group. The only character that stands out and begins to make a change is Donnie himself. Otherwise the character development is very flat.

Story development on the other hand is very well done. Throughout the movie the viewer begins to feel the paranoid atmosphere of the film. The director did a great job creating the mood and creepiness but that was pretty much all that was done exceptionally well. Everything else was pretty much average. The film is worth a watch but is nothing
