District 9 is the latest release from director Neill Blomkamp. The film focuses on alien refugees that land in South Africa. The government sets up a “camp” also known as “District 9” to house the alien refugees. In the years following, the camp begins to turn into a rundown slum with terrible living conditions. The entire camp is being overseen by a government agency known as MNU. The conflict arises when MNU wants to relocate the Aliens to District 10.
District 9 was one of the most widely publicized movies of 2009. In the weeks leading up to the release of the film it was pretty much impossible not to see a trailer for the film. District 9 boasted an impressive advertising campaign but could the film deliver? The answer is yes. The film not only delivers on action and excitement but it goes much deeper.
The film is based on the events in “District 6”. District 6 is an inner city area located in South Africa. During apartheid the area was deemed whites only and 60,000 residents were forcefully removed from their homes. The film District 9 puts the aliens in the position of the minorities. When watching District 9 you can only find yourself rooting against the humans including the main character. You want to see the Alien creatures succeed and live happily the way they want to. The film is definitely not your traditional sci-fi film. In my opinion I give District 9 a B+
